Diving in Mozambique – Open Coastlines, Warm Waters, and Encounters with Big Fish
Mozambique is one of the most exciting, yet also most challenging, diving destinations in the Indian Ocean. Its long, exposed coastline, warm waters, and nutrient-rich currents offer excellent conditions for pelagic marine life, but also demand flexibility and experience. Dives here are less predictable, but often extremely rewarding.
Tofo Beach
Tofo is internationally renowned for encounters with whale sharks and manta rays. Most dive sites are located in the open ocean, often with some chop. Visibility can vary, but when the timing and conditions are right, the encounters are exceptional. Pelagic activity is particularly high during the summer months.
Morrungulo
Further north, Morrungulo offers calmer dives with expansive reefs and coral gardens, and significantly fewer divers. The area is ideal for relaxed dives while still offering occasional encounters with passing pelagic species.
Vilanculos & the Bazaruto Archipelago
Vilanculos is the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, a marine protected area known for its healthy reefs, excellent visibility, and diverse underwater landscape. Coral reefs, sandy channels, and islands offer a balanced mix of relaxed diving and opportunities to observe large pelagic fish.
Ponta do Ouro
Located in southern Mozambique near the South African border, Ponta do Ouro is known for shark encounters, drift dives, and seasonal offshore activities. Conditions can be challenging, but experienced divers are often rewarded with dynamic and unforgettable dives.
